What to Expect: Motivational Respite Care

Motivational respite is for a child who is consistently stuck in opposition/defiance, acting out, and displaying out of control behavior at home. During motivational respite care, the child will be in chore-based stations.

The mission of all king’s ranch respite is…

Motivational respite care brings about immeasurable benefits both to the parent and the child. At King’s Ranch, our goal is for parents to have the opportunity to get the rest they need and reset their ability to provide the effective nurture and structure their child needs. In turn, our hope is for the child to be able to reset his or her brain from fight, flight, or freeze to the relational centers as well as helping them reach toward the parents for attachment and healing. Respite is very beneficial, and often essential, in aiding and accelerating the healing process of the child.

At King’s Ranch, we believe that we are not the attachment figure for these children, however, we do have a responsibility to provide loving yet matter-of-fact direction. Most importantly, we are to mirror God’s character in our interaction with all children. We are accountable before God for the respite care we provide.

Here is what you can expect when you send your child to King’s Ranch for motivational respite.

  • Your child will be in chore based stations including bouncing and journaling.

  • We will feed your child a little before the family meal, then give them an activity to do while the respite provider’s family eats. Your child will eat simple meals. In order to support attachment with parents, we reserve family dinners for home. Meals are kept simple. No sugar or anything extra. All of those things come from Mom.

  • Your child will be continually pointed back to Mom and Dad.

  •  While in motivational respite, the child will accompany the respite provider out of the home if an errand must be attended to that cannot wait.

While at respite, the respite provider will move the child between therapeutic and motivational respite at their discretion depending on whether or not the child is doing the Big 6 consistently over a period of time.

At the conclusion of motivational respite, the relationship is restored with the parents with a nurturing activity. This activity is not optional.

Updates will be provided as requested. If you would like an update during respite, please email your respite provider and we will be more than happy to provide you with one!

Respite at King’s Ranch is a supportive measure to encourage the child to reach toward the parents for attachment. Our mission is to end adoption failure, therefore respite at King’s Ranch is not to be used as a holding place while a new placement is found.
